Wood Carving, Gesso Cutting & Decorative Carving Restoration

Fine carved details are often the defining feature of antique furniture, picture frames, architectural elements and decorative objects. Over time, carvings can become damaged through wear, accidental impact, insect attack, poor repairs or the loss of individual decorative elements.

At Butler & Castell, we undertake the restoration, conservation and reproduction of carved wooden details using traditional methods and materials. Whether replacing a missing section of acanthus leaf, repairing broken scrollwork, or recreating an entire decorative element, our aim is always to preserve the character, craftsmanship and integrity of the original piece.

Each project is approached individually, ensuring that repairs blend sympathetically with the surrounding work while remaining appropriate to the age and significance of the object. Where required, replacement carvings are hand-crafted to match the original design, timber and finish.

Our Carving Services Include:

  • Replacement of missing decorative elements

  • Hand-carved reproductions

  • Architectural wood carving repairs

  • Frame and mirror carving restoration

Gesso Cutting

Gesso cutting is a traditional decorative technique used to create intricate patterns and ornamentation in a gesso ground before gilding. The process involves carefully carving or incising designs into prepared layers of gesso, producing crisp detail and texture that catches the light beneath the gold leaf.

Historically used on picture frames, mirrors, furniture and architectural elements, gesso cutting was a hallmark of high-quality craftsmanship throughout the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian periods. When combined with water gilding, the technique creates rich decorative surfaces with exceptional depth and character.

At Butler & Castell, we undertake both the conservation of original gesso-cut decoration and the recreation of missing or damaged sections. Using traditional materials and methods, new work is carefully matched to the surviving original, ensuring a seamless and historically appropriate repair.

Whether preserving an important antique frame or recreating lost ornament for a restoration project, our approach respects the craftsmanship of the original maker while ensuring the finished work remains visually coherent and structurally sound.

Our gesso cutting services:

  • Conservation of original gesso-cut decoration

  • Recreation of missing or damaged ornament

  • Traditional gesso preparation
